And we’re off! — Day 1 of Living Below the Line

In this first of a series of blogs from our team members doing the ‘Live Below the Line’ challenge, Team Leader, George, describes his first day attempting to live on £1 a day or less

Team Leader, George

Today begins our week long ‘Living below the Line’ challenge which is raising money for YoungMinds. This is the UK’s leading charity championing the wellbeing and mental health of children and young people. Between 5 March and 12 March, Philippa, Philly, Sarah, Ollie, Steven and myself will each be living on £1 a day for 5 days (different individuals are starting on different days) in order to raise money and awareness of the connection between childhood poverty and young people’s mental health. Throughout this time, we will each be blogging about how we’re getting on and some of the questionable recipes we’ve invented!

To start off the week, I thought I’d share the preparation I did and the food I have planned for the next 5 days. I have to say that preparing for this challenge has been eye-opening, as I love my food and I enjoy cooking, but when looking at what I could purchase with just £5, I was rather surprised at what I could (or couldn’t!) afford. Bearing in mind that we only have a £5 budget, my approach to this week has been to plan, plan and plan! I spent a good amount of time identifying where I could get the best value for money, as when you only have £5, even a small price difference can make a real impact.

Shopping voucher for the week

As you can probably tell from my receipt (other supermarkets are available!), I’ve decided to eat similar food each day of the week to make sure I can get the most out of my purchases. Breakfast will consist of Porridge, my lunches will be a cheese and cucumber sandwich and a banana, and dinner will be spaghetti with tomato sauce. I also bought some custard creams in case I get peckish — everyone loves a biscuit!

My food for the next week — not much!

Tonight, Philly will be blogging about how she is getting on and how she is finding Living Below the Line, 24 hours in.

The reason we are all doing this is to raise as much money as we can for YoungMinds, so we would all be incredibly grateful if you felt able to donate to our JustGiving page. All money raised will be going directly YoungMinds and will help to ensure their vital work can continue.
