Subway Diary 8
Hyper-capitalism strips the past of its meaning, its value; forgets it. In an era of hyper-capitalism, only the present is remembered. Progress is an illusion. Material security, medical advance, the acceleration of the transfer of information all conceal a steady loss in the quality of life, inner-life; the feeling of being alive — Being. It is harder to die in the advanced world, even for the poor, but harder to live. Longer life does not mean a more meaningful life. More information does not guarantee greater wisdom. A single good poem does more positive work than the entire body of infotainment available online. A good poem spiritualizes bodies, vivifies and colors experience.
