Optics, one of the most despicable realities of corporate America.

For those of you who never heard this term before, it means..

pretending to do something that doesnā€™t matter to prove something to someone that shouldnā€™t care, but does.

Where the quality of your work comes second.

The business world is where you will find the worst offenders ā€” in a culture built on fear, resentment, and moodiness.

Some typical examples include:

  • changing the tab open on your monitor when someone walks by
  • moving your mouse so you donā€™t show up as ā€œAwayā€ on your work messenger when working remote
  • expectation to stay late/come in early when thereā€™s no necessary reason to, even when thereā€™s little to do
  • sending emails late at night to act like youā€™re still working
  • being obligated to dress up even for informal, internal meetings
  • and many moreā€¦

Essentially, optics is anything that is obligatorily done that doesnā€™t actually matter for the success ofā€¦
