Seems to me that wiping your phone makes you look really suspicious and will likely increase the amount of time you are detained. Even not having a phone could have that effect.

As a lawyer, though, who has confidential information on my phone almost by definition, this is definitely troubling.

Indeed, one could argue that an attorney’s duty of confidentiality requires him or her to refuse to allow the government to unlock the phone, even if that means not getting into the country.
