So this is week 32 of the freelance life, that’s like 8 months right? Recently I’ve realized that there are 2 things I hate about running a business. The first is a repetitive schedule that makes me feel like a cog in a machine. This is something I struggled with in my old job and thought would be gone when working as a freelancer… but it’s not… it’s still here. The second is the majority of social media… It’s so often toxic, draining, and the birth of all imposter syndrome. There are silver linings to social media, like the friends I’ve made through it, but I hate the pressure of posting and the anxiety of something not doing well analytically.
While I hate both of these things I am also realizing that in my 8th month I need to work much harder on them. So I sat down and decided to create a schedule for my social media. Here is what I came up with.
It is impossible to juggle all the different social media outlets. My plan is to focus on Dribbble and Instagram. From those 2 I will schedule content for Twitter and Facebook. I will still use Twitter like I do now, but there will also be scheduled posts focused on my work, rather than only having my random ramblings or virtual high fives to people I look up to.
NOTE: The only reason I have a Facebook for Noble Folk is because they require you to create it to have a business account on Instagram. Now that I do have it I may as well aggregate my content there… I guess.
In addition to those 4 I will still be attempting (and often failing) to post on Medium once a week as well as my weekly movie review and poster design on my 52Films site. Last week’s poster was for Annihilation.
Looking at these outlets I don’t feel as overwhelmed as I thought I would. With proper planning I think it is even maintainable. Because of that, and perhaps my self destructive tendencies, I am throwing a wrench in it all! I talked about it a few months ago, but I am actually going to try and start creating weekly content on youtube. This will be tested in April while I’m traveling and going to Creative South. I’m not totally sold on the fact I will be able to create content worth watching, but I have the means to try it, so why not!
8 months in and I’m another cog again, but this time it’s in my machine. Hopefully I can keep up with the plans I so easily made. If you have any suggestions or advice, I would really appreciate it. Leave a comment here or hit me up through my contact page or any social media DM.
