Disclaimer: I want to live in the beautiful world of AI and am an ardent supporter of it, but I want to dissuade people from blindly following the hype and ignoring so many shortcomings IT STILL HAS.

In the wake of 2023, the world witnessed an exponential rise in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Robotics. Concepts once relegated to the realm of science fiction became mainstream realities, with technologies like GPT and Large Language Models (LLMs) captivating our collective imagination. However, amidst the awe-inspiring advancements, it’s crucial to adopt a balanced perspective. Are we truly on the cusp of a future where AI and robotics replace humans in every domain? Or are we, perhaps, veiled by the allure of innovation, overlooking the inherent limitations that persist?

Sapiens: Yuval Noah Harari

In 2024, my journey into this inquiry began with the pages of “Sapiens”, a profound exploration of humanity’s past and a contemplation of its future. Here, in the final chapters, lies an open-ended question: How will AI shape the destiny of our species? This question lingered, echoing through my thoughts as I delved deeper into the discourse surrounding AI and its implications.

Recently, I found myself captivated by the cinematic narrative of “Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya,” a film that provocatively probes the boundaries between human consciousness and artificial intelligence. This narrative, while fictional, mirrors our real-world quandaries with striking clarity. It compels us to confront the dichotomy of AI’s promise and peril, urging us to tread cautiously amidst the allure of technological utopia.

Undoubtedly, the benefits of AI are manifold and undeniable. Its intelligence is unparalleled, its efficiency unparalleled, and its capacity to process vast datasets seemingly infinite. With precision and accuracy, AI systems execute tasks with a perfection that surpasses human capabilities. From predictive analytics to personalized recommendations, AI seamlessly integrates into our daily lives, enhancing efficiency and convenience in myriad ways.

Pros of AI:

  • Intelligence beyond human capacity.
  • Efficiency that borders on the supernatural.
  • Perfection in execution, unfettered by fatigue or fallibility.
  • Trained on vast swathes of data, capable of discerning patterns and correlations invisible to the human eye.
  • Adaptable, capable of seamlessly integrating into any task or workflow we set before them.

Cons of AI:

  • Emotionless automatons: devoid of the rich tapestry of emotions that color human interaction, AI lacks the ability to truly empathize or understand the nuances of human behavior.
  • Blind obedience: shackled to a rigid set of instructions, AI lacks the moral compass to discern between right and wrong, good and evil.
  • Vulnerability to exploitation: susceptible to hacking, manipulation, and the insidious influence of false data. Need any further proof that our friend Tony Stark’s Savior of the World: Ultron?
Ultron
  • Contextual blindness: devoid of the contextual understanding that underpins human communication, AI often stumbles when confronted with situations that demand nuance and subtlety. Take this scenario: in a dire situation like an health scare, you might not have enough time or mental state to give full context to a robot: You say to a fully automated car: “Drive me to the nearest hospital” and it might land you at a Veterinary Hospital.
  • Binary worldview: trapped within the confines of 0s and 1s, AI struggles to grasp the complexities of human language, often falling prey to the pitfalls of sarcasm, irony, and humor.
  • The specter of deepfake: a harbinger of a dystopian future where reality itself becomes a malleable construct, twisted and contorted to serve the whims of those with ill intent.
  • Identity theft: a digital specter haunting the corridors of cyberspace, threatening to usurp our very essence with a few lines of code. Here is another Indian movie showcasing how easy it is to assume someone’s identity.

As we stand on the precipice of a future shaped by AI and Robotics, let us not allow ourselves to be swept away by the tide of hype. Let us instead approach this brave new world with eyes wide open, acknowledging both its promise and its perils. For only by facing the limitations head-on can we hope to unlock the true potential of AI, and chart a course towards a future that is as beautiful as it is bright.
