One reason for the size of the ships was needing the ability to conduct combat operations in the Barents Sea in the dead of winter. That was a similar reason reactivating the Iowa class. Not because of the 16 inch guns. Those were left on because it would cost to much to remove and rebuild the holes. The USN needed a big platform for Tomahawk missiles and the armor to hold out until the missiles were all fired.
