OK guys, google mess it up again.

Since around the beginning of 2018, google forced us to use their new app called “Backup and Sync” to do automatically photo upload to Google Photos.

The app itself is worse than what their former app “Google Photos Backup” on several features/functions. But we don’t have any choice, do we?

For the past weeks I started to notice that the photo taken by my Sony A7RM2 is sometime sorted out of place, same goes for my GoPro. The photo taken with Samsung Galaxy S8 is the only one that always having consistency.

On several occasions, Google treat all my photos taken with Sony A7RM2 as if the timestamp of the photo is UTC when in fact it is GMT+7. So my photo taken at 1 PM will be get +7 hour and shown that it has been taken at 8 PM.

Generally, this is the conclusion of the issue, compared to the old one.

So, Let’s say the photo is taken at 10AM, GMT+7. This is how it would be.

For the photo without GPS. With the old app, you can see that if you are not going to other timezone, you will be just fine.

But unfortunately, with the new app, we are all fooked.

I google and found several discussion on the issue, the one that is most active look like https://support.google.com/photos/thread/105789?hl=en

Solution

At this stage, there’s only one solution to get your photo sorted correctly is to Add correct GPS data to all your photo before upload. As I mentioned in previous blog. Head to http://www.geosetter.de/en/ to download GeoSetter program. It will help you tag GPS location into your photo easily.
