Quality of light is to think about how much contrast the image has. Photographers use lighting ratios to describe the amount of contrast in an image. These numbers describe the amount of light illuminating the highlight side of the image versus the shadow side.

Effects of light on picture

For example, dark and light areas in the same scene can at times, cause your camera’s light meter to produce underexposed or overexposed images. By noticing the background light, the photographer could have adjusted the camera exposure settings to make the picture a little lighter.

Use of light in photography

In photography, sometimes you can move that light source, and other times you have to move the subject to alter the position of the light. Side lighting, or placing the light source or the subject so that the light hits from the side, fights the boring look of front lighting by creating shadows and depth.

Quality of light

One of the key components of any photograph whether you’re working in a studio or outdoors is the quality of light. The “feel” of the light in a photograph often can determine its visual impact. Mood: Hard Versus Soft Light. Keep an open mind and try to work with the light you have; it’s a great exercise.

Three qualities of light

  • Intensity: The amount of light reflected by the performer and the background.
  • Color: The color of the light reflected by the performer and the background.
  • Direction: The direction (or angle) of the light determines the length and location of the shadows cast by the performer and the three dimensional props around him.

Light fixtures provide a path for electricity to power a light bulb and our fixtures allow for visual activity day or night, enhance our décor, create a mood, and even provide safety in otherwise hard-to-see environments.

Characteristics of light

The three most important characteristics of light are

brightness

colour

Temperature

Brightness does not need much explanation, but colour and temperature are slightly more subtle concepts. Light is electromagnetic radiation visible to the human eye.

Natural light and fill light

NATURAL LIGHT IN PHOTOGRAPHY.Paying more attention to light is perhaps the single most important step you can take to improve your photography. Three factors influence how natural light renders a subject, time of day, camera direction and weather.

Fill light is form of supplementary light mainly used to lighten shadows in an image. Fill light is often used in portrait photography to create a contrast between the image subject and image background giving the scene a sense of depth despite the final product being 2 dimensional.

Lighting is a key factor in creating a successful image. Therefore it is necessary to control and manipulate light correctly in order to get the best texture, vibrancy of colour and luminosity on your subjects.
