I want to add that the community viewing experience, which is so important for documentaries which do screening campaigns with debates, could become in the future a more popular way of viewing films, especially those with a social message. We have seen that happen for Hidden Figures and Netflix’s 13th, even though they had not foreseen that.
Those community screenings, if they are not coupled with a TV or Digital deal, mean less viewership perhaps, but allow the filmmaker to be more in control and also foster a more focused and qualitative viewing experience in my opinion..
