Thanks, Patrick! I thought of you a lot while I was composing, and imagined that you yourself would enjoy developing contemporary Socratic dialogues and even sharing them with your students. You are probably right that the outcome is a little brighter than the current reality. But I tried to operate under the assumption that whenever someone agrees to a dialogue with a person who has no real power beyond his/her intellect(like Socrates), there is at least some degree of good will and curiosity. The president who fired the faculty member at Mt. St. Mary’s probably would never have agreed to the dialogue in the first place. I like to fantasize that if enough of these dialogues were going around, eventually enough people would demand that administrators start tackling the issues they claim to care about.
