angry woman, writer, commissions welcome; bylines: @indyvoices. [Warning: I make fun of transphobes, a lot.] (she/her)

Well this sucks a bit no?

As you may already be aware I recently deleted all of my tweets and put my account on lock after transphobes doxxed me and then gave my details to a cyberstalking website. I had intended to just tell people who were giving me money what the situation was and take a few days to chill out, but a certain someone whose penance should be eating a spoonful of mayo got a little bit over eager on that one. So I’m having to write this a bit earlier than I expected.

I’ve been desperately trying to avoid writing anything long form on this but the discourse in my feed is just so constant. Not least thanks to a white cis woman having decided to cosplay the controversial character and then dismiss criticism by invoking the struggles of women of colour as a defense. But I think there’s a few things that need to be said that the discourse is currently lacking, so here goes nothing I suppose. Don’t hate me.

I don’t think CD Projekt Red did anything transphobic here — in this particular instance, other crap from their discord etc not withstanding. I’m not just saying this because I’m hype for the game and hoping CDPR will see this and send me a free copy, thanks boys. …

(Bookmark this piece, I intend to update it with everything I know as the situation evolves and I gather more information. It will likely be the only piece I do on this subject.)

Updates are at the bottom

What’s happened? GenderGP hasn’t been particularly clear on what’s happened exactly, the details are a little scarce. The email and tweets they sent out claim that due to negative media attention, the Pharmacy Regulator have stopped the chemist they use from honouring prescriptions. …

The last 24 hours of my Twitter experience has mostly been filled with threats of violence, misgendering and accusations of everything from sexual violence to child grooming. This is Twitter when you’re a trans woman who doesn’t back down to the angry, hateful mob that has now taken JK Rowling’s brand to be their martyr.

In a moment I will fill this entire article with all the horrifying replies and quote tweets I received in the last 24 hours, many of which have posted in support of JK Rowling. But first a little context is probably necessary. That context is mostly Helen Staniland to be honest, who has spent years trying to undermine trans equality and oppose GRA reform. She’s infamous on trans Twitter for having endlessly framed trans people using the bathroom as “waving their penises around by your daughters”.

Its been quite the week for the open letter industry with this letter being the third to be published. First we had the letter where a bunch of people who likely don’t know what’s going on signed in support of not bullying JK Rowling, who is bullying transgender people. Second we saw over 1500 people from the publishing and writing industries of Ireland and The UK sign a counter letter in support of transgender people in an amazing demonstration of solidarity and support. The third letter is the lawyers.

It’s a weird letter though, I’m not going to lie. It looks as though it was written previous to the GRA consultation report and they had to try and re-write it on the fly as the previous two letters dropped so they could get in on the bandwagon. Its kind of all over the place and makes very little sense and doesn’t seem to actually ask for anything in it? You know, like how the other two had an actual point whether you agreed with it or not. …

With Eddie Redmayne having chimed in and become a trending topic on Twitter for almost a day now, an open letter signed by celebrities (and Graham Linehan) and with #RIPJKRowling having helped along the way. The direction of ‘the trans debate’ appears to be switching further away from attempting to understand trans people and our needs and facing more in a direction of sympathy for those engaging in and endorsing abuse against us.

Even our own Government seems to be in on the act, repeatedly having made pointed comments about the need for respectful discussion on transgender equality. With trans people first being quick to point out that you can’t respectfully discuss your human rights with those who believe you don’t deserve them and second trying to point out the constant onslaught of abuse and harassment we face despite it constantly to falling on ignorant ears. …

Numerous celebrities who obviously haven’t paid any attention to what’s going on or have and are decidedly in support of transphobia have chimed in to sign a letter supporting JK Rowling. JK Rowling being an almost billionaire castle dweller with numerous book deals still in the works who has definitely one hundred percent been cancelled by the woke brigade don’t you know. All over “past comments on transgender people” as one publication put it instead of just calling it what it is. A wholesale denial of transgender equality and platforming of anti-trans propaganda and rhetoric.

Cleverly, the anger created by JK Rowling betraying a generation of children who her own writing taught to stand up to people exactly like her has been twisted to further support the bigotry. The narrative surrounding JK Rowling’s transphobia is taking a massive back seat to claims that she’s being unfairly targeted with abuse and harassment. Gee Jo, I wonder how that feels. …

A sensationalist headline I plan to justify before they and their solicitors have time to look up if its defamatory or not. In a long conversation with Rob Jessel, co-founder of We Are Fair Cop, a group I believe to be a transphobic hate group, we discussed trans people and criminality at length. Jessel absolutely stunned me with statements in which he asserted that criminality is linked to biology.

I’m not going to lie, it was almost 2am, I was high and when this conversation happened I was genuinely astounded something so ridiculous was being said to me. Especially by the press officer of a hate group who want to be taken oh so very seriously. …

I’ll try to keep this one brief, mostly because I didn’t intend to write anything today but I guess there’s no peace for trans people on Sundays in the UK anymore. Today’s tidbit stems from a piece in either The Times or The Sunday Times, I can’t really be bothered to check. Eitherway, the piece alleges that the PM is planning to not allow what’s been called ‘self ID’ and instead just to make the Gender Recognition Certificate cheaper to access.

Transphobes have been celebrating this all day on Twitter, claiming the tide is turning though I’m not sure how. The status quo is a transphobic country that ignores what trans people want and need, that hasn’t changed, no tide has turned. Others are claiming the GRA is dead in the water, though trans people have been quick to point out these alleged leaks aren’t anything we haven’t already seen. …

Transphobic dog whistles and where to find them.

Today is maybe the fifth time #IStandWithJKRowling has been trending on Twitter this year. This time likely as a result of a billboard in Vancouver being taken down after just a few days. A billboard put up with the express purposes of pushing transphobic narratives and capitalising off JK Rowlings name to do so.

Yet even just a year ago, even despite JK Rowling having engaged in transphobia online repeatedly, the phrases “I ❤ JK Rowling” and “#IStandWithJKRowling” were extremely benign. Almost exclusively any post carrying them from pre-2020 is just fans appreciating her work and influence on their childhoods. …
