The Women’s and Equality Committee ft some transphobes

On Wednesday 9th December 2020 Caroline Nokes chaired a meeting between The Government, 3 trans people and 3 transphobes. This is all part of the inquiry going on in relation to gender recognition act reform, the consultation of the aforementioned and how it all went so horribly wrong for everyone involved.

I won’t speak much on what Ruth Pearce, Stephen Whittle and Alex Sharpe had to say; you are more than welcome to go check that out for yourself and know that I agree broadly with most of what they said. They all raised good points and showed a keen insight into the issues going on, explaining them clearly and succintly. If I had to add anything it would be just one thing which a few people might think a little bit radical. There should be no legal gender/sex recognition.

No really, none at all. For the vast majority of people the government having a record of your sex is almost entirely pointless. As far as I’m aware the only thing it controls is your pension/retirement age which should be equal and not different between the sexes. Laws shouldn’t be written in ways that would prejudice one sex over another, they should be written in a gender neutral and all inclusive way; what’s illegal for you should be illegal for me even if we have different sexes. Recording your sex in an official government capacity is, quite frankly…
