How we turn wallet, contract, and transaction addresses into melodies

Who We Are?

Notahash creates music from the pulse of blockchain technology, using hash values as inspiration. The Notahash method transforms the silent hash values of Bitcoin and Ethereum blockchains to symbolize historically important addresses, wallets, and transactions into a symphony of sound.

What is a Hash?

A hash value is a string of characters representing compressed data. In a 16-character system, a hash value will consist of 16 characters, consisting of letters and numbers. Hash values are used to verify the authenticity of data, as this value is always unique, and any changes to the data will result in a different hash value, alerting it to a possible security breach.

For example, when creating a wallet on Metamask, you can see the hash value in the wallet address, which serves as user authentication and is never duplicated for another wallet. These values are applied to different types of data, including wallet addresses, transactions, and contracts. Unlike a traditional payment system, where the authenticity of a transaction is verified by a bank upon request, the validity of a transaction in the blockchain system is independently verified on blockchain explorer sites, such as Etherscan.

The screenshot shows an example of the hash value for the CryptoPunks contract address and the transaction address within this contract.

How do we make a hash sound?

Taking a 16-digit hash value, we divide our sound scale into numerical values from 1 to 9 and letter values from A to F, which are known to all classical and jazz musicians, and create an equation for harmony.

For example, let’s consider the track «Notahash — Vitalik Buterin’s wallet». We take the hash of his presumed wallet, which looks like this — Ab5801a7D398351b8bE11C439e05C5B3259aeC9B (link to Etherscan). We take the tonality of A minor and divide our scale into numerical values, where:

The same positions will have letter designations:

We can systematically not adhere to octaves — this is a matter of personal preference.

We can also not be bound to octaves systematically — it depends on our personal preference. In the same way, we can take any mode as a constant and apply both letter and numeric values. For example, let’s take the melodic minor, knowing that in it the 6th and 7th degrees are raised. Consequently:

The same positions will be occupied by letter designations:

Rhythm

Each composition includes melody, harmony, rhythm, form, and stylistic features. If the melody is taken from a wallet code or a transaction, then the harmonic function, rhythmic structure, form, and stylistic features are our preferences. However, we also use the code to support the rhythm:

Harmony

The same mechanics apply to the harmonic system, but we must understand from the outset in which key we are. Let’s take an example in the key of A minor:

Collection NFT «Source:»

The NFT collection ‘Source’ is a very important one for Notahash, because it continues the album from which the whole project started.

At the dawn of Notahash, we released the album «Source:» comprising six mesmerizing tracks telling about the historical milestones of the blockchain. Three of these tracks were derived from the Bitcoin blockchain, while the other three were sourced from the Ethereum blockchain.

The first track, Genesis Block, features the original code of the 0th block that launched the blockchain, with a hidden message in the code to the financial world, “The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks,” from the mysterious figure Satoshi Nakamoto.

The second track is dedicated to Vitalik Buterin, a philanthropic-minded young man from another planet who created the Ethereum blockchain.

Next, we remember Laszlo Hanyecz, who made the first-ever Bitcoin purchase of two pizzas for 10,000 BTC. Write to us, Laszlo.

The DAO is about the Jentzsch brothers’ company, which implemented the idea of democratic management of an organization without the need for a central authority, using blockchain technology.

We also touch on the infamous leader of the Mt. Gox exchange, Mark Karpeles, who, on June 23, 2011, sent 442,000 BTC to two addresses in a single transaction to prove that the funds were under his custody.

The final track is based on the contract address of CryptoPunks, the first NFT collection featuring 8-bit punk characters.

The NFT collection ‘Source’ is now ready to be published and we are eagerly awaiting the completion of the smart contract development. This collection will feature both MusicNFTs and MotionArt NFTs. This material will serve as the foundation for the creation of a website with a timeline of blockchain’s historical events, told through music. For the first 20 holders of the NFT album ‘Source’, consisting of six different Motion NFTs, we will create a track based on their wallet or contract address and release two music albums with these tracks on streaming services.

This is what Motion NFT looks like, where the accumulating hash is synchronized with the sound and the sphere

The motion sphere is also encoded and has three constituent parts that visualize different sound elements within the track:

We are constantly exploring and experimenting with data. As such, the motion sphere may change, but the one thing we do not alter is the central point that corresponds to the notes/hashes of a wallet, contract, or transaction, as it symbolizes the core of the project.

The collection is now ready to be published and we are eagerly awaiting the completion of the smart contract development.

Future: Our Mission and Goal

One of the key missions of the project is to immerse listeners into the mysterious yet open universe of blockchain, experimenting in a close interplay with musical sounds and visual experiences, creating a new experience.

Our goal is to become a creative community and create projects that bring us joy, where anyone who shares our vision and contributes to the project becomes part of the team. We learn and grow together. We are collaborating with musicians, artists, developers, and curators, and we are open to any proposals. We are currently working on several music and art collaborations. At this early stage, you can become part of something big in the future.
