Not an Alien in 2017

First, we’d like to thank all of the people who helped make the launch of Not an Alien in 2016 such a success. It has been a privilege for us to have these conversations and share these stories, and we look forward to continuing this work in 2017 and beyond. So, to everyone who has been on Not an Alien so far, and to all of our listeners and supporters: Thank you!!!

Second, we’d like to seize the opportunity to briefly outline some community standards. As yet, the standards for Not an Alien have remained largely unspoken, but we thought it would be helpful to lay out a few basic guidelines. We’ve, thus far, striven to keep Not an Alien a relatively apolitical and open platform on which for individuals to share their stories; however, we feel it’s important to establish that on Not an Alien there should be, in no particular order:

1. No racism
2. No sexism
3. No classism
4. No homophobia
5. No Islamophobia
6. No anti-Semitism
7. No ableism
8. No ageism
9. No colorism
10. No casteism

As most such lists end up being, this is surely incomplete, but hopefully captures the point; as we move forward as a nation, we here at Not an Alien feel that it is as important as ever to create space for constructive dialogue and the building of meaningful bridges of understanding, while simultaneously establishing clear boundaries about certain standards which are non-negotiable.

Third, as a new organization, we’re eager to build meaningful and lasting partnership with likeminded individuals and groups, and we will strive to contribute — in the modest ways we can — to making New York City, the United States, and the world inclusive and safe for all.

Fourth, we’re thrilled to welcome two new members to the Not an Alien team. Vennela is joining us as a social media intern, while Dan has kindly offered to volunteer his time in a logistical support role. Thank you to both of them!
