Launched on 30 November 2022, ChatGPT is a brand-new AI technology. It can answer a lot of different questions about many different topics and allows you to choose and get the best answer of what you ask or want to know. I’m pretty sure that you’ve heard it before, either from online videos or your friends told you about it and you thought, “Wow, it sounds interesting. Should I try it?”

Study.com has conducted a survey on 100 educators and 1000 students, nearly 9 in 10 students have used the tool to help finish their homework assignment. And according to a survey by Intelligent, approximately 60% reported that the student use the tool to accomplish at least half of all their written assignments. This can be so addicting for them and can harm creativity by discouraging exploration and experimentation since it offers you an instant answer without giving any effort for research. Is it truly a sin to use this tool for doing a homework assignment?

Well, it depends on how ChatGPT is used. If they rely on the tool to finish their homework without doing a single effort to learn and understand the topic, for sure the answer is yes. Why? It can lead to a decrease in critical thinking skills.

However, if they use it as a source for their learning and gain a concept from it, well, it is valid and legit. Let me give an example of how useful this tool actually is.

ChatGPT can explain us the concept like we are 5 years old

I usually use this tool to gain a new concept about the topic I want to know about and this is very permissible. I sometime use this tool because it allows me to learn something at my own pace and level of understanding. What makes me amaze about this tool is that ChatGPT can adapt to my learning style and preferences, offers me additional explanations, examples, and exercises based on what I need.

Let’s draw the conclusion. ChatGPT is a powerful tool that can be used for learning and gaining knowledge about different topics. However, it should not be relied on entirely to complete homework assignments as it can bring us to a decrease in critical thinking skills and creativity. Instead, we should use it as a source of information to fulfill our efforts in researching and understanding the topic. In the end, the effectiveness of ChatGPT depends on how it is used and integrated into the learning process.
