Are you ready for a thrilling journey through time and culture? Buckle up, because we’re about to embark on a whimsical adventure at National Museum!

The National Museum is the largest and most comprehensive museum in Indonesia. It is located at Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat №12, Gambir, Central Jakarta. People refer to it as the “Elephant Museum” due to the presence of an elephant statue in its forecourt.

It all started back in 1778 with the establishment of Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen, an institution dedicated to advancing research in various fields of knowledge, art, and culture. One of its founders, JCM Radermacher, generously donated his own house at Jalan Kali Besar in the vibrant Kota Tua Jakarta area, along with a remarkable collection of cultural artifacts and books. Little did he know that this act would lay the groundwork for the birth of a magnificent museum and library.

Fast forward to the time of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the Lieutenant Governor during the British era. He commanded the construction of a new building to serve as a museum and a meeting place for the Literary Society (now known as the State Secretariat Building). But that’s not all! As Indonesia re-entered the Dutch East Indies era, the collection grew, leading the Dutch government to order the construction of a brand-new museum building at Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat №12 (the current location of National Museum). Finally, in 1868, the doors of this awe-inspiring institution swung open to welcome the public.

Among the locals of Jakarta, this museum holds a special place in their hearts. They affectionately call it the “Gedung Gajah” or “Museum Gajah” due to the bronze elephant statue adorning the forecourt. This majestic sculpture was a gift from King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) of Thailand, who visited the museum in 1871.

On September 17, 1962, the management of the museum was handed over to the Indonesian government by the Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen, and it was renamed as the Museum Pusat. In 1979, it received its current name, Museum Nasional, and it now operates under the Ministry of Education and Culture. Its noble vision aims to strengthen national culture and foster friendship among nations.
