Mekong Delta
Mekong Delta is a region in southwestern Vietnam, where the Mekong river approaches the sea through a network of distributaries. It is unique to people who are from modern city because the local life is on the water. This waterway system is very well developed, which has remained unchanged for centuries.
DUC HUE is a rural area we visited in Long An province, where is less known by tourists than the southern part of the region and for this reason is still unspoiled. It is only about 3 hours away from Saigon by bus, near the border with Cambodia. The best way to visit this region is by boat, which can send us to the house of the host family, the market, the forest, the school, our neighbours…
WAR MEMORIAL is a huge memorial built on a base field used during the war. A number of stones remembers the name of the soldiers victims of the war. The monumental area is surrounded by the forest, where it is still possible to see the holes left by the french bombs during the war.
The economy of this region is based on fishing and agricultural products, such as rice, fruits and vegetables. The local people produce food for themselves as well as for people in big cities. Farmers in conical hats work hard in paddy field from early in the morning to late in the afternoon. They often need to stoop in the sun for hours a day. Most families have animals like cows and chicken in the court.
During these three days we lived in the host family, we got the chance to taste a variety of fruits, including coconuts, longans and jackfruits. The night before we left, the friendly host cooked the chicken in four different ways, which was an impressive farewell dinner because they have provided the best food they have for us.
It is hard to say goodbye once you see its beauty and meet the friendly locals. If you want to have this amazing exprience like us, why not spend a few days here and decompress from the busy city life? But don’t forget to bring your mosquito repellent, or you will not be able to enjoy a peaceful night in Mekong Delta.
