Do You Really Know How Good Your Doctor Is?

When you need to find a restaurant to take your parents to for their 50th anniversary it’s perfectly reasonable to check Yelp! for reviews. After all, you might not have enough experience with fancy restaurants and it’s nice to get outside opinions from more experienced diners. The same goes for shoe stores and copy shops- if you need a specific type of service the internet is a valuable tool for getting input from your peers. The internet is not, however, a valuable tool for choosing a doctor or surgeon.

When people rate their doctors online they rate things like parking, personality, and how they feel about their visits. What they don’t rate is the doctor’s knowledge about their ailment or their treatment outcomes. They don’t typically rate those things because they don’t have the information to do so.

Big data has allowed for all kinds of improvements to healthcare, not the least of which is ratings scales for doctors’ quality scoring. Why choose a doctor based on a recommendation that includes the ease of parking at her building when you can choose based on her procedural outcomes?
