Should You Spank Your Child?

Corporal punishment has long been thought to be a staple in parenting. When a child just doesn’t want to behave or listen, a simple spanking was considered appropriate for a parent to correct their child’s behavior. However, more and more families are choosing to opt out of this practice thanks to results from scientific research stating that spanking could be doing more harm that good. After decades of research, studies have shown that though CP may temporarily correct behavior, it may have unproductive or even lasting effects into adulthood.

Classic ideologies surround CP in the home that date back hundreds of years. “Spare the rod and spoil the child,” was a popular phrase linked to the belief that spanking or beating a child was and essential response to bad behavior and helps them grow to be well mannered adults. Societal norms and not wanting to seem like a “weak” parent also put pressure on many families to incorporate CP into their disciplinary actions.
