Of company leaders, 78% express that lost or stolen devices containing company information is their highest mobile security concern. Regardless of what kind of security measures, policies, or rules in place, a lost phone can be a big threat to company security.

Owners of personal smartphones of tablets use them not only for themselves, but 67% of the time also to access company data. Even when there were anti-BYOD (bring your own device) policies set by the company, 20% still admit to accessing the data, and 22% admit to sourcing their own file sync and sharing apps. And even after all of this unprotected sharing, 45% of companies reported missing devices.

Phones that go missing don’t just disappear, either; most of the time someone will pick find, pick up, and rifle through the phone. Fifty unprotected phones pre-populated with fake personal and corporate data were left in random locations and the monitored when they were found. This study showed that only 50% of people made an attempt to return the phone, 96% searched through the private data and applications and an astonishing 83% tried to access the sensitive corporate data.
