Lisa, thanks for the thought provoking reply. I believe you are reading things into my words that simply are not there, however.
Having said that, I will take the bait. Choice certainly does enter into the picture at some point. If you take away free will, then you are left with some secularized version of, “The devil made me do it,” and I absolutely reject that type of thinking.
I am not blaming anyone, but if you remove free will you veer into the dangerous realm of determinism in my opinion.
I’m not attacking anyone or any social class. And, yes, once you are addicted, I believe your free will is compromised and you need help. That is why I favor increasing awareness of mental health issues, especially addiction, and why I support greater access to mental health resources.
