We believe the survival and relevance of the news industry depends on newsrooms’ ability to build meaningful relationships with the people they serve.
A serious problem the news industry does not talk about

As good as your focus on the audience is, I’m still troubled by the framing of the question. The real question should not be: How can the news industry stay relevant and survive? The answer — building meaningful relationships with the audiences — sounds great, but in reality merely uses the audience as a means to the news industry’s end. The real question should be: What does the audience need? The answer may not have anything to do with the survival and relevance of the news industry. We need to be brave enough to ask the real question and accept whatever the answer turns out to be.
