How important is physical beauty?

Beautiful always have and always will have their way. John Keats’ remark, ‘a thing of beauty is a joy forever’ will always come back to you when you see a pretty woman have her way not because she was enterprising or smart but because your mind perceived her as beautiful.

It is said that the ‘golden ratio’ of the length of the face to its width is 1.618:1. Jessica Simpson is a famous example of this. The fact that Fibonacci series lead to this ratio is an astounding one.

Perception of Beauty in formative years

For most of the women, the dad is the first person of the opposite gender they see and associate the traits of beauty of that gender: preferring a guy sporting a beard or a stubble, a guy clean shaven or having a goatee all have their roots here.

Similarly, for most men, their mothers are the first person they encounter of the opposite gender. They carry the perception of beauty based on her traits subconsciously throughout her life.

So, yes, the above digressions, though delicious refuse to address the elephant in the room: how important is physical beauty? ‘It completely depends on the beholder’ is complete BS; look at Diana, look at many in history who have got away with many white crimes with effortless ease. It is definitely a position of advantage, some biologists even go to the extent of saying good looks comes from good looks which even means money accumulates there: now, that’s pushing it!

At the very source, attraction is a physical phenomenon, an animal phenomenon. To rise above that, you need to have a clear line of thinking. It is important to look beyond the physical traits into their personalities. After all, you can ‘never judge a book by its cover’. The so called leagues in good looks are for those people who believe in them; the rest are going to make great friends of great personalities, whatever their “physical beauty quotient” is, they are going to end up with great partners and the shallow among us who hold entitlement dearest to themselves are going to comment on them and they would be in a place where they couldn’t care less.
