Coping with the stress of everyday life is challenging enough. When these daily challenges are complicated by the impact of having a chronic condition, people experience a wide range of emotions.

Chronic Disease in a Nutshell

Chronic illness has the potential to create immense challenges to those suffering. Unlike acute illnesses, such as a cold or the flu, a chronic illness persists throughout a person’s lifetime. More so, it’s something that impacts and forever changes the lives of those diagnosed.

Chronic diseases usually fall into one of three categories:

Physical: Problems such as rheumatic diseases, cancer, diabetes, vascular issues and autoimmune diseases (Crohn’s, Lupus, Psoriasis…

in the morning

when the sun arrives

and there is a new day

i am so disgusted

by you

and i wish

you would leave me

alone

but at night

when i am lonely

i am in love

with you

with all of my heart

train me,

keep me like your pet

throw me in a cage

with the door left open,

so you can come and go

as often as you please

while i remain chained,

a prisoner to your body,

left with nothing

other than desire

and idle time

to reminisce on the pain

the kind worth begging for

demand my touch

and know i’ll be there

to be used for what i’m for

ready to swallow you up,

greedily,

just the way you like it

train me,

into submission

so one bite will always

lead to the next

We hear a lot about common ailments plaguing society, but there’s little mention of mediocrity.

Mediocrity is a disease.

It is the easy road, the result of the “something for nothing” approach to living. Fewer people want to work hard anymore. Many of us settle for less, long before we try hard for better. We just aren’t pursuing our passions — with a passion — or at all. Based on my personal analysis, expectation and entitlement have become the antithesis of a meritocracy.

There’s an entire generation of us in the work force who have been praised for being “well-educated…

In order to achieve the most out of life, goal-setting is imperative. Whether you’re striving towards personal or professional success, goal setting provides focus and direction. The best way to crystallize your goal(s) is to write them down on paper. It may sound trivial, but there is a lot of power in writing down your goals. The act of putting thoughts to pen and paper plays an important role in closing the gap between an idea and a plan.

Experts agree, those who write down their goals achieve more than those who do not. Research conducted by Dr. Gail Matthews…

I write …a lot.

I write, simply, because I have to. Writing is not just something that I do, it is a part of my very life-force. It is who I am. As much as I despise routine and repetition, I am committed to honing my skills and carve out a few hours each day to draft some sort of essay, poem, musing, or journal entry. I write, because I am compelled by an unequivocal need to express what I see and feel inside myself.

Society force feeds us the notion that emotional intensity and sensitivity are liabilities, but these…

secrets seek refuge in the darkness.

there,

is where my demons find solace;

ostracized, ignored and seemingly forgotten.

forced to tread the depths of my unconscious,

while i give way to this self-perpetuated artifice

and swallow every evil fed to me

by the master hidden behind the curtain

i can no longer reject the notion that my demons live inside of me

i am bound to them.

the longer i chose to ignore them,

the louder they slam and rattle these chains.
