David,
Would this marvelous tool make it easier for users to access ANY site, regardless of its content? If so, then you would appear to be making the same mistakes that the original developers of the internet made — failing to empower the exercise of judgment and assuming that adding communication tools is inherently positive. I don’t believe that is the case. Technological capacity is neither inherently good nor bad. Are you facilitating access to child porn? Will you be an accessory to sex trafficking? Are you undermining the efforts of artists to create an environment in which they can survive through their craft? The point is, there are many critically important and valuable reasons to restrict certain communications, and sometimes influencing thought is a better avenue for effecting change than providing a new tool. It may be less efficient, but you know what you are getting.
On an unrelated matter, I was wondering whether you might educate me about the difference between the refraction that you endorse, and the “redirection” that caused such an uproar during consideration of SOPA/PIPA. Both cases would appear to involve the user being directed to a site/URL other than the one which she requested. Can you offer any insight on this? Thanks.
