Thanks David, but why unexpected? I was puzzled by that one.
Coming to your question about how to generate a greater appreciation for empathy to achieve understanding and tolerance, I have no specific ideas other than talking about it whenever and wherever possible. On social media and face-to-face. Loudly and softly. From the treetops and the grasses. Of course, getting people to understand that their views necessarily reflect a particular perception of reality which is shaped by history and position will be a tremendous challenge — even more so in a time where so many social, political and cultural forces reinforce the certainty of one’s existing views. And there is the true challenge — we need to disrupt certainty in favor of ambiguity. Certainty on almost anything requires a rejection of other possibilities. The more information/input we have, the more rational and just our decisions will be. All positions are not equal, and empathy fuels an ability to imagine alternatives that will improve decision-making by expanding the perceived universe of possibilities. We need to dream more, and let the realities of others shape our dreams. For too long we have been dreaming in black & white. Technicolor dreams are infinitely more fascinating and vibrant.
