I suffer from severe anxiety and reading this has given me a few different ideas and techniques in helping me to identify my obstacles, take better control of my thoughts, and be successful in taking back control over my life. I think the workbook portion is a huge bonus too because it truly helped me in identifying issues that were contributing factors that I hadn’t even considered before.

Review: Collection of Pop Psych and Self-Help Techniques

This book purports to be a 21-day step-by-step guide to help you with depression, anxiety, anger, and negative thoughts using cognitive behavioral therapy as a base. Unfortunately, the author doesn’t seem to have an accurate understanding of what cognitive behavioral therapy actually is. According to Psychology Today, CBT β€œrests on the idea that thoughts and perceptions influence behavior,” and the CBT seeks to β€œtreat problems and boost happiness by modifying dysfunctional emotions, behaviors, and thoughts.” To that end, the aim of CBT is β€œto identify harmful thoughts, assess whether they are an accurate depiction of reality, and if they are not, employ strategies to challenge and overcome them.” So as the word cognitive in the title of the therapy suggests, CBT is about the accuracy of thought patterns and seeks to improve it if they are not.

If this book were genuinely based on CBT, the author would have the reader look at their thought patterns for accuracy (perhaps for problems the person believes exist) and then guide to more affirmative, better ways of thinking if needed. This is not the case. These brief articles that make up the 21-day guide seem to be a grab bag of techniques taken from modern pop psychology and self-help. They may or may not have any cognitive patterning basis. Some ideas he mentions could be helpful to a person trying to understand themselves better or reach a more balanced emotional state, perhaps, but I wouldn’t call it cognitive behavioral therapy.

Unfortunately, the book was riddled with errors in grammar, punctuation, and usage. Semicolons and commas seemed little understood. Much of the phrasing uses false subjects (there is/there are) and impersonal passive expressions (it expressions that don’t refer to a specific noun). Both of these constructions make the writing more wordy and less direct, distancing writer from reader. Some sentences are quite long and convoluted. The book needed a good copyeditor and proofreader.

If you’re looking for a book that will give you a quick, practical take on cognitive behavioral therapy, I suggest you look elsewhere. If you’re looking for a simple collection of self-help tools, you might find this book of interest.

Title: easy to understand

Review: The problem with a lot of medical/psychology/psychiatry books are that they are written in a way that seems to be a hidden language to the lay person. This book is different, the author doesn’t use any fancy words, he uses language that is easy to follow and understand but also engages the reader so that they feel confident in what they are reading. This is a great book and one that I recommend to anyone who wants to understand more about their own issues or wants to help a friend or family member. There are different techniques to try as it’s not a one size fits all issue.

Title: Simple & Easy Enough To Grasp

Review: What caught me about this book and convinced me to keep going was one simple sentence: β€œYou are not deep in the trenches fighting with guns against an enemy seeking to destroy you as well, but the battles that you fight within can take the same emotional toll on you.”

This simple sentence helped me to realise the importance and simplicity of getting to know me and how I best can control my emotions. I realised that if I wasn’t going to learn how to control my emotions for myself, I needed to do it for those around me.

James does a great job in keeping this topic simple enough so that even guys like me can grasp it and make a change and head in a positive direction. Do yourself a favour… read this book, it won’t take you long, but it will change who you are.
