With the intent of being fully transparent regarding Nulogy’s upcoming Link Apprenticeship focused on Woman-identified Developers, we are starting a dialogue with the community through the form of a Living FAQ. We will respond to questions asked in the comments section of our blog post, or sent to apprenticeship@nulogy.com.

We invite you to share your thoughts and comments with us.

How Link Works

How can I apply?

👉 Click this link! 👈 Additionally, you may want to read our website for more information.

How many apprentices are you hiring?

We are looking for two apprentices. We value cooperation over competition and, in addition to working with their mentors, there will be many opportunities for both apprentices to work together through collaborative activities and support each others’ learning.

How much time do mentors spend with apprentices?

The short answer: a lot. But this is normal for how our product teams work at Nulogy. Working collaboratively is simply how we do things here, whether that’s pair-programming, or “three amigos”-ing a complex story, or just mobbing around someone’s computer to help debug an issue. So one-on-one mentoring of apprentices is a natural extension of our collaborative culture.

To be more specific, however, the first month of Link is focused on building technical skills, and approximately half the time will be spent working with a mentor on coding exercises and learning sessions. Following the first month we will introduce more autonomy. Although you’ll work less with your mentor, you’ll still be interacting with them on a daily basis. Meanwhile, you’ll begin collaborating with other developers on your product team. By the end of the three months, you’ll have fully integrated with your product team, and will be pairing with the other developers on the team’s backlog.

Are apprentices paid?

Yes. Apprentices are paid $1000 per week for the three months span of the Link apprenticeship.Following the apprenticeship, the intention is to transition apprentices into full time developer roles with an average salary in the range of 50k-70k CAD.

What is the time commitment for apprentices?

This is a full-time role. Link will be taking place at Nulogy offices Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm for a stretch of three months. Apprentices will be paid to learn for 3 months full time in an immersive mentorship experience.

Will this convert into a full-time role?

Yes, it’s our full intention to transition both apprentices into full-time developers positions following the three month program, so we’re looking for apprentices who can commit to a full-time role after the program ends.

What if I am living outside of Toronto?

As long as you are a Canadian citizen and are able to make it for the group interview (Saturday, March 25th) and in-person interviews (between April 1–7), we’d like to hear from you!

What if I can’t make the group interview on Saturday, March 25?

Please let us know about your conflict in the application or through email, and we will try our best to accommodate any reasonable circumstances.

For the application, can I submit a coding exercise in another language outside of Ruby, Javascript, or Java?

While we value your experience in other languages, we are only accepting coding submissions written in Ruby, Javascript, or Java as these languages most closely resemble the tech stack we use. If you are more proficient with another tech stack please note this in your application process including what kind of learning you have done to be able to submit your application. We will certainly consider this in the process.

Rationale of the Program

Is this a one-time program, or is it ongoing?

This will be our fourth Link cohort. We run the apprenticeship program when we have the capacity to invest in mentorship. Once this round — which is specifically focused on women — wraps up in July 2017 we will evaluate its success in order to determine whether we will launch it again for this purpose.

Why are you running this apprenticeship round for women?

We’ve written a whole blog post, take a look!
TLDR: We see apprenticeship as a meaningful way to immerse junior developers in software development. Leveraging our existing Link apprenticeship program to focus on women is a way for us to both support underrepresented groups in the tech community, while also enriching the thought diversity at Nulogy.
