Statement by Alumni of NLSIU in Solidarity with Survivors of Sexual Abuse by Prem Ayyathurai

This is a statement in response to these gruesome accounts having been brought to light.

Dear all,

We, the undersigned, as alumni of the National Law School of India University, stand in solidarity with the three survivors who have come out with their stories of rape, sexual abuse, and intimate partner violence by Prem Ayyathurai (NLSIU, Batch of 2014).

Three women, at least one of whom seems to be a student of our alma mater, have taken to the internet to post gruesome accounts of being violated physically, sexually and emotionally over the course of their romantic relationships with this perpetrator. Their stories reveal a horrifyingly consistent pattern of abuse where they were gaslighted, humiliated, forced to engage in non-consensual sexual acts, and subjected to emotional blackmail. Their perpetrator has, until now, faced no consequences for his actions.

In a society that shames survivors of sexual assault with abandon, the #MeToo campaign has generated a ray of hope, with its capacity to bring about change at best, and awareness at the very least. To tell one’s story of abuse, to rise above the trauma and the self-blame, is an immensely courageous act. Meeting these accounts of sexual abuse with disbelief does a great injustice — not only to these women, but also to all those survivors who cannot come out with their stories for fear of being disbelieved and ridiculed.

In light of the counter-narratives floating around the internet, further shaming these survivors, we have decided not to remain silent any longer. We stand by the survivors, who have found the strength to speak up against a man who managed to silence them for years.

We believe you and are here for you.

Signed,
