Today is a gift. Be grateful for it.

I woke up this morning feeling quite lazy as I went to bed last night with a heavy heart as I thought of the 70 people who died in in a suicide bombing at a hospital in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s Balochistan province. The suicide bomb took out an entire generation of lawyers in that city and wounded over 100 more.

The last few months alone has seen murders, killings, bombing, drone attacks etc taking loved ones away from families and friends in Lebanon, Yemen, Jordon, Turkey, Bangladesh, US, France and Germany (to name a few).

A few years back when I was travelling in Pakistan, I was in Karachi’s financial district, during the anniversary of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto (a strong locality for her political party), I witnessed one of the most horrific things in my life.

Four motorbikes with 2 men on each (one driving and the other holding a gun) starting randomly firing at people in the market we were walking through. In that split second and what felt like hours in slow motion, several people around me dropped dead. In the midst of screaming, shouting, the sound of gun shots, utter chaos took over the entire market and eventually the entire city.

I just stood there and froze as I watched people literally drop like flies and blood shed everywhere. I was unable to move nor make a sound. Till this day when I think about what happened it scares the hell out of me.

I was pulled to safety by those I was with and we hid for half a day to escape the carnage and finally reached to a place of safety. However it made me think. It made me think that:

  • We never know what tomorrow will bring us;
  • We never know when our time is up;
  • I must live everyday to its fullest;
  • I was lucky to survive that so I owe myself to make sure I am as happy and content as possible;
  • I do no let others keep me off track in following my dreams;

Most importantly it made me think that everyday is a gift. A beautiful gift. A gift like no other. To be able to wake up and have an opportunity to be around those whom I love and enjoy their energies. To be able to help and support others. I am grateful for everyday. Along the way I forgot to be as grateful as I used to be. So today I woke up with a renewed sense of gratefulness.

Do not let anyone take away today. Nor let anyone ruin today with any negative energy. Your time is precious and too valuable. Grab this gift with both hands.

Today is a gift. Be grateful for it.
