Importance of Vitamin K

Many times when people think of bone health, calcium is the first thing that comes to mind. But to support overall bone health, many nutrients play a role.
Vitamin K2 — Studies show that vitamin K2 stimulates bone absorption and prevents bone resorption (breaking down of bone). Getting adequate amounts of vitamin K2 into the diet can be a challenge. It’s mostly found in animal foods (pasture raised eggs, chicken, liver, dairy products, grass-fed butter or ghee). The amounts of vitamin K2 in grain-fed animals is relatively low. Not only is vitamin K2 important for bone health but also vital for heart health! And certain medications such as statins, can impair the absorption of vitamin K2.
Other nutrients that play an important role in bone health are vitamin D3, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, and vitamin A.
If you suffer from any type of digestive imbalance (celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, etc), you may not be adequately absorbing these nutrients from the food you eat. A supplement may be needed to provide the missing nutrients. However, when purchasing supplements quality is a key factor.
