History of the Fremont Street Experience

As you probably know, the Fremont Street Experience is a world-famous attraction

located only blocks away from NuWu Cannabis Marketplace. An outdoor pedestrian mall and performance space, the Fremont Street Experience features the world’s largest video screen for nightly displays and three stages for live music; it’s a true wonder and one of Las Vegas’ signature attractions.

History of the Fremont Street Experience

Most people don’t realize that Downtown Las Vegas was home to most of the city’s casino action. That began to change in the 1980s, and by 1992 the Strip controlled 80% of the Las Vegas casino market. To compete with the strip, Downtown Las Vegas hotels and casinos looked to build an attraction that would entice more visitors to downtown businesses. Initially, they planned to build a life-sized Starship Enterprise, but the proposal was turned down by Paramount Pictures head honcho, Stanley Jaffe. Ultimately, Downtown businesses and local government agreed on creating the unique, Fremont Street Experience.

Before creating the Fremont Experience, Downtown Las Vegas used the western end of Fremont Street to display the signature neon lights of Las Vegas, earning the nickname, “Glitter Gulch.”

The famous architect, Jon Jerde, created the initial concept, which included a floating sky parade suspended from the canopy. Both the City of Las Vegas and the Fremont Street Experience accepted Jerde’s design, and so began development. However, the city ended up scrapping Jerde’s sky parade concept, while preserving the architectural design for the canopy

September 7, 1994: Fremont Street permanently closes a five-block section off to automobile traffic
September 16, 1994: Groundbreaking of the new Fremont Street Experience begins.
February 15, 1995: Space frames are added over the next five months allowing the roof to begin to take shape.
December 14, 1995: Fremont Street Experience and the Nevada Symphony host an official public preview including a light show.
December 31, 1995: Fremont Street Experience host its first New Year’s party.
November 1996 : The Neon Museum at the Fremont Street Experience opens with an illuminated Hacienda Horse & Rider sign at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Fremont Street.
Early 2000s: In the early 2000s, Fremont Street Experience added permanent stages for musical events.
June 2001: Fremont Street Experience upgrades the sound system
June 14, 2004: Fremont Street Experience unveils a $17 million upgrade featuring a 12.5-million LED display and more color combinations than the original display. An initial $70 million investment and ongoing improvements create one of the most successful downtown redevelopments.
October 16, 2017: NuWu Cannabis Marketplace, the first cannabis dispensary near the Fremont Street Experience and the ‘Largest marijuana store on the planet‘ opens.

Nearby Attractions to Fremont Street Experience

Viva Vision: The LED display canopy runs along the Fremont Street Experience promenade from Main Street to Fourth Street. A section of the canopy equal to 1/50th of the total size is roughly the same size as the largest electric sign in the world. Initially, the canopy housed 2.1 million incandescent lights. After a $17 million upgrade, there are now 12 million LED lamps illuminating the canopy. Every night starting at dusk, the canopy hosts light and sound shows on the Viva Vision video screen.

SlotZilla Zip Line: SlotZilla is a 12-story, slot machine-inspired zip line attraction. There are two levels of lines: the lower “Zipline” (77 feet up) and the upper “Zoomline” (114 feet up). Featuring a launch tower with over-sized dice, two 37-foot-tall showgirls, a pink flamingo, simulated video reels, a martini glass, and a giant arm, SlotZilla cost $17 million to build.

Pedestrian Mall: The Pedestrian Mall was created when Fremont Street permanently closed down automobile access in September 1994. The mall features music throughout the day and night when sound and light shows aren’t being presented. There’s free entertainment every night featured on three stages throughout the mall.

Neonopolis: A popular shopping complex, Neonopolis operates independently from the Fremont Street Experience.
