Day 7: 10 Songs I’m currently loving right now

Hmm… Today’s post is about music. Well, to be frank, I don’t really consider myself a music person. I mean, I listen to music often but I don’t go out of my way to find out about new releases, or trending songs, or albums, or musicians… that kinda thing. I didn’t even know who Aretha Franklin was until she passed — may her soul rest in peace. I told a colleague of mine this and she was absolutely incredulous, like how is that possible. And I was thinking, “like how do you know all these people?” No doubt music can be uplifting and can pass messages to your spirit, to encourage you when you’re down, to inspire you, to cheer you up and energize you. But, I don’t seek them as a primary source of motivation. I mostly listen to popular songs — mostly gospel as you’ll find — as I hear them. And even though I don’t seek them, when I listen, they have a way of connecting with me.

Having said that, what are my currently loved 10 songs? In no particular order, maybe except for number one, here they are.

  1. Yahweh (You are able) — Ada Ehi

Creator of the Universe

What can’t You do?

What can’t You do, Yahweh?

I so love this song. Maybe it’s the upbeat tune or the powerful expression of unwavering faith in God, but this song has been playing in my head for a while now. And it was performed in church today again. Oh! It kindles my faith every time I hear it, reminding me that, indeed, nothing is impossible for God to do.

2. Atobiju — Joey

There is nothing too difficult for You (Sebi Iwo lo f’oju orun sa’aso bora)

Ki le O le se

Atobiju Oba

Pardon my Yoruba transcription o. I heard this song during Shiloh 2016, and it served as a source of encouragement for me during the trying period that came after. Again, another gentle reminder that God is dependable and there’s nothing too difficult for Him.

3. Made a Way — Travis Greene

Standing here, not knowing how we’ll get through this test

But holding on to faith, You know best

Nothing can catch You by surprise

You’ve got it figured out

Travis Greene’s songs are awesome, way awesome, to me. He has the ability to extol God appropriately, singing from a depth of experience that we can relate to. This song reminds me that when we’re at our wits end, like I’ve been on many occasions, God has that amazing ability to step in and save the day so that the glory can be all of His. Verse 2 is so apt. Any time I hear, I’m reminded of how He, indeed, has stepped up for me in the most important experiences of my life, and I’m grateful! In fact, I was inspired to write about 3 new verses and a refrain of this song.

Now we’re here, looking back on where we’ve come from

Because of You and nothing we’ve done

To deserve the love and mercy You showed

Your grace was strong enough to pick us up

4. This God is too Good — Nathaniel Bassey ft. Micah Stampley

Look how He’s turned my life around

Made me a shining star

His glory to reveal

This God is too good o. It’s a good thing to give thanks to the Lord, to take some time out to acknowledge His blessings in your life. This is what this song helps me to do. I love how Nathaniel Bassey (and I love Nathaniel Bassey) just expresses himself in this song, even in his local language. And the drag at the end is everything.

5. Thank You for being God — Travis Greene

You’re too big, for error

You’re too wise, for mistakes

You are the Almighty God (my remix)

Perfect in all Your ways

It’s great to know that there’s Someone in charge of everything and He’s looking out for you, rooting for you. This song appreciates Him and helps you recognize your place in His grand plan. The instrumental in this song is top-notch. And Travis Greene again, with his lyrics and rendition…

6. Onise Iyanu — Nathaniel Bassey ft. Glorious Fountain Choir and Micah Stampley

The Words You speak turns things around

Your outstretched arm has lifted me

You took away the chains and cords

That held me bound

Indeed, He’s the God of miracles. He does amazing things — He’s been doing amazing things. I love the bridge part of this song. It’s as if he’s saying, “OK, everyone stop! We’ve been going too fast. Let’s just take it slow and really worship Him.” This song gets me in worship mood all the time. Nathaniel Bassey… highly spiritual worship leader!

7. Intentional — Travis Greene

I don’t have to worry ‘cos He working for me

He working for me, yeah.

I believe, He’s working for me (get your confidence back).

This song talks about the willingness of God to bless His people and move on their behalf and He’s deliberate about it — it’s no accident. Hence, your faith should be stirred and kept alive, according to Romans 8:28. The instrumental and the video of this song… aww… so good!

8. I’m blessed —Sinach

Kings shall come to my rising

For I am favored and graced

In all I do, I shall prosper

Everything I touch shall be blessed

This song makes music out of Scriptures — Isaiah 60 and Psalms 1 — and is prophetic. I use it to speak into my future, what I know must happen. It helps me remain conscious of the Hand of God upon my life. Sinach is one of my fav gospel artists.

9. All I’ve ever needed — AJ Michalka

I’ve got nothing left to give of me

I gave up everything so there is nothing left to lose for me now

Could you forgive me somehow?

Lord, all I’ve ever needed was Your love

This song touches me. It’s about us, when we veer off God’s plan and face gross consequences (or even before we do). When we realize it, we need to repent and come back on track. This song is the one that reminds me to keep checking myself, as the Scriptures say, “Examine yourself whether ye still be in the faith.” It also reminds me that our God is always willing and ready to forgive us, take us back and make us whole again. His love is everlasting and indeed, it’s all we need. And we have it.

10. Castle on the Hill —Ed Sheeran

I’m on my way

I still remember these old country lanes

When we did not know the answers

And I miss the way you make me feel

It’s real, we watched the sunset

Over the castle on the hill

You know, I can’t still place why exactly I like this song because the lyrics don’t exactly make sense to me. Maybe it’s the beat, the way it kinda scatters in the middle and later arranges itself; maybe it’s the fact that it talks about missing home — I’m missing home; maybe because it talks about childhood friends, when life was easier; maybe because I heard it while watching a highlight reel of the 2017 Confederations Cup and it synced perfectly with the goals… I don’t know. But, it rounds up the top ten.

Honorable mentions:

  1. My Trust is in You — Frank Edwards
  2. Your Word is True — Yemi Levite
  3. You are so good to me — Tim Godfrey
  4. You never let go — AJ Michalka ft James Denton
  5. Olowogbogboro — Nathaniel Bassey ft Wale Adenuga
