As I was sitting in my empty one bedroom apartment, I wonder how I got to this moment. About a year ago, I was living at home with my mother and grandmother and working at a dead-end job. I was not satisfied by where I was personally and professionally and I made a decision to have a better paying job where I was working in my field of study and living in my own apartment. Once I made the decision, my thoughts shifted from where I didn’t want to be personally and professionally to where I wanted to be. Fast forward a year, I got offered a high paying position at a start-up organization in Atlanta which allowed me to move from my mother’s apartment to my own place and it all started with one thought…

According to Webster’s dictionary, thoughts are ideas, plans, opinions, pictures, etc., that are formed in a person’s mind. The mind is a powerful tool that allows a person to connect to the world around them. The mind is divided into two parts, the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is connected to logic and reason and operates 1% — 5% of the time while the subconscious mind is connected to feelings, beliefs, habits, and emotions and operates 95% — 99% of the time. Your subconscious mind runs on autopilot based on the experiences that you have and the habits you create. Have you ever has something heavy on your mind while driving somewhere but still made it to your destination? This happened because your subconscious mind ran on autopilot, which allowed you to drive to your destination while you consciously were thinking about that particular thing.

Your mind has the ability to create thoughts based on the things you expose to it. What you see and what you hear are the keys that open the doors to the subconscious mind. When you constantly view, hear, or say something, those images and words become embedded in your subconscious mind without you even knowing it. If you exposed yourself to negative images and words, negativity is going to flow out from you. Likewise, if you exposed yourself to positive images and words, positivity is going to flow out from you. Wherever you put your focus is going to be magnified in your life.

Whatever beliefs you hold in your subconscious mind ultimately become your reality. An example of this is the Placebo effect. It is a physiological phenomenon by which a placebo improves a patient’s condition because the person expected that it would treat or cure their condition. Because of the person’s expectation, the subconscious mind created a meaning response that told the brain that the placebo was real thus causing the body to react as such. Likewise, what things you expose your subconscious mind, whether they are real or not, will cause you to react as if it is real. Your mind cannot distinguish between a real event and something you merely think.

In order for you to achieve your goals, you must think positive thoughts that align with them. For instance, if you wanted to get a better job, instead of thinking about how much you hate your current job, you should think about the occupation, culture, and benefits of the area of work where you want to be employed. Envision yourself working at the job that you want. When you begin to focus on that, your subconscious mind will transmit ideas to the conscious mind about how to obtain the job of your dreams.

There is more to achieving your goals than thinking thoughts that align with your goals and dreams but training your mind to focus on those positive thoughts is the foundation to reaching your goals and achieving your dreams.
