Huts of the Marangu Route — Comfort on the Roof of Africa
By Nyamera Treks and Safaris
If you’re planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and seeking the comfort of sleeping in huts rather than tents, the Marangu Route is the perfect choice. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it is the only Kilimanjaro route that offers permanent hut accommodation at every overnight stop. At Nyamera Treks and Safaris, we believe understanding the hut system helps trekkers prepare better for their Kilimanjaro adventure. Here’s everything you need to know about the huts along the Marangu Route:
1. Mandara Huts (2,700m) — First Night’s Stop
Your first night on the mountain is spent at Mandara Huts, located within a lush rainforest zone. These are wooden A-frame structures with dorm-style rooms that accommodate four to eight climbers each. A dining hall, solar lighting, and flush toilets are available. After your hike, a short walk to Maundi Crater offers stunning views over northern Tanzania and into Kenya.
2. Horombo Huts (3,720m) — Acclimatization and Transition
On the second day, you’ll reach Horombo Huts, which is often used as a two-night stop for acclimatization. These huts are more spacious and come with separate buildings for cooking and dining. The location offers magnificent views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, and the alpine desert scenery begins to reveal itself here.
3. Kibo Huts (4,703m) — Base Camp Before the Summit
Situated in the barren alpine desert, Kibo Huts mark the base camp before your midnight summit push. These stone buildings are more basic, offering dormitories with bunk beds and no running water. The altitude makes this stop more challenging, but the anticipation of reaching the summit adds to the excitement.
4. Back to Horombo and Mandara
After a successful summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m), you’ll descend back to Horombo Huts for a much-needed rest before continuing the descent to Mandara Huts and finally exiting the park at Marangu Gate.
