Bed bugs are tiny, flat,oval-shaped, nocturnal insects that feed on human blood. They usually feed at night when humans are in deep sleep which is why most people will not notice or feel it.

Different people react to bed bug bites differently. Some are quick to form reactions while others can take up to 14 days to have a reaction. Research indicates that most people become more sensitive with each bed bug bite.

Most of the time, bed bug bites look like red or pinkish bumps on the skin, clustered together or in a zigzag line. The bites may also appear randomly on the skin. Other people develop welts and/ or hives on the skin while others develop blisters. Some people will not develop any bite marks or reactions. Bed bug bites are not known to transmit diseases to humans. However, repeated bites and continuous scratching can result in skin infections and in very rare cases, life-threatening reactions.

The presence of bed bugs and bed bug bites also increases anxiety among affected people. It should be noted that the presence of bed bugs is not always an indication of poor hygiene. Bed bugs do not live on the host (human) like lice. Detecting their presence necessitates inspecting the dark areas of your home where they are most likely hiding.

Most people will notice blood spots on their bedding the next day and irritation where they have been bitten. These bites are more likely found on skin areas that are usually exposed during the night such as the neck, arms and legs.

Bed bugs leave behind a characteristic foul smell, exoskeletons and droppings indicating where they have been in your house. Bed bug bites are commonly confused for mosquito or flea bites. One of the ways to minimize the effect of bed bug bites on the skin is to wash the affected area with soap and warm water and afterwards applying an antiseptic cream or taking antihistamine tablets to stop the itching. If the reaction is severe, visit your dermatologist for more effective treatment.

Since bed bugs can survive without feeding for more than six months and reproduce really fast, it can be difficult to get rid of them. They are also easily transferable through infested clothes, bags, shoes and even storage containers. If you notice droppings and exoskeletons in mattress folds, crevices and furniture cracks, chances are high that you have an infestation. In such cases, enlist the services of professional bed bug exterminators.
