The Verizon Connected Futures Research and Prototyping Challenge, in partnership with NYC Media Lab, supports development of new media and technology projects from universities across New York City, linking students and faculty with industry experts. $250,000 in funding has been awarded to fourteen teams from Columbia University, Cornell Tech, The New School, New York University and Pratt Institute for work focusing on connected devices, journalism, and virtual & augmented reality. Columbia University Computer Science Professor Shree Nayar and Makoto Odamaki, a visiting scientist from Ricoh Corporation, have developed Cambits, a modular imaging system that enables the user to create a wide range of computational cameras.
U.S. News & World Report features the wearable technology studio class taught by Rebeccah Pailes-Friedman, adjunct associate professor of industrial design and fashion, and Pratt’s ongoing wearable technology collaboration with NASA.
Columbia’s Roxana Geambasu presented FairTest, a method for discovering unwarranted associations in data-driven applications, at the Federal Trade Commission’s PrivacyCon.
An NYU research project led by Ken Perlin wants to make virtual reality less lonely.
RevEx, a data visualization tool for finding stories in millions of reviews online by NYU Tandon’s Enrico Bertini, was awarded $35,000 in funding from Knight Foundation.

On Friday, March 4th from 2:00–6:00 PM is the Technology, Privacy, and the Future of Education symposium hosted by NYU’s department of Media, Culture, and Communication. The symposium brings together educational specialists, journalists and academics to open a dialogue around the pedagogical, legal and ethical repercussions of the use of new technologies in educational environments.
