Who was Edvard Munch?

Edvard Munch 1863–1944 was a Norwegian painter and printmaker, best known for his iconic painting The Scream. Born in Loten, Norway, Munch’s early life was marked by tragedy, including the deaths of his mother and father. These experiences deeply influenced his art, which often explored themes of love, death, anxiety, and existential angst.

Edvard's parents were Christian Munch and Laura Catherine Bjølstad. Edvard's early life was marked by the death of his mother when he was just five years old. The death of his father followed when Munch was 14.

Edvard had four siblings, and he was the second eldest in the family. Andreas was Edvard’s older brother and became a noted literary figure, serving as a poet, playwright, and critic. Laura was Edvard’s younger sister. Inger was another younger sister of Edvard. Peter was Edvard’s youngest brother.

Edvard never got married, but he had significant relationships throughout his life. One of his most notable relationships was with Tulla Larsen, a wealthy Norwegian woman. Edvard and Larsen had a tumultuous relationship that was filled with passion and disagreements. They were engaged for a brief period but never married. The relationship ended in a dramatic way, with Edvard reportedly shooting himself in the finger during an argument.
