As soon as education gets difficult (and useful education always gets difficult) it’s social pressure, peer pressure and our own need to fit in and achieve that often keeps us going. The typical online course provides precious little of any of these elements.

Traditional students opt into these…and in other social situations (online or not) we find ourselves opting into social situations that give us opportunities to champion the growth of others and opening ourselves up to being championed by others.

Not everyone finds themselves in environments that satisfy those desires in areas that actual result in growth so we turn to Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat to give us the feeling that we are growing ourselves and growing others.

If online learning environments can unlock the latent passion individuals have to champion the growth of others I think they find success.
