7 Ways to Bring the Climate Movement to Cuomo’s Doorstep This April

Hey everyone — this is our first Medium post! We’re NY Renews, a coalition of more than 140 organizations across our state from Buffalo to Long Island.

Together, we’re fighting to move NY to a 100% renewable economy while protecting communities that have been most impacted by climate change & inequality and creating thousands of good, safe jobs in the process.

(Follow us on Facebook & Twitter).

This April 23rd, we’re heading to Albany to send a clear message to Governor Cuomo — walk your talk on climate! This means:

1) Stop all new fracking infrastructure

2) Move to 100% renewable energy

3) Make corporate polluters pay

This day is bigger than NY Renews — we’re teaming up with the movement that courageously won a ban on fracking in NY in the past few years, national climate organizations like 350.org and Food & Water Watch, and hundreds of individual New York residents taking action for the first time.

All because New Yorkers deserve a present & future with clean air, clean water, and safety from extreme weather that damages homes & claims lives.

Here are 7 ways you can make this day successful:

1. Sign up to march with us on this historic day.

Join us for a march & rally and for an optional opportunity to participate in civil disobedience. There will be free buses heading to Albany from all over the state. More details at the site!

2. Help make beautiful banners & props for the day of action, on March 23–24 in Brooklyn.

Hang with an awesome collective called People’s Puppets & other volunteers to cut, paint, make beautiful things that will make our rally look and feel inspiring. (No previous experience needed!). RSVP on Facebook!

3. Join a phone-banking night in Manhattan on April 4.

We’ll have pizza & simple instructions for reaching out to as many people as possible to remind them to register for the event! On the evening of Wednesday April 4, we’ll do text & phone-banking, no prior involvement needed here either. RSVP here & bring your friends.

4. Get your Twitter fans excited.

Retweet our post above, copy & paste the text, or check out this outreach toolkit for more sample tweets you can use.

5. Share on Facebook.

Repost our Facebook post (like NY Renews while you’re at it!) or make your own! Here’s a sample post you can use:

On April 23rd, I’m heading up to Albany with thousands of other New Yorkers to tell Governor Cuomo to walk his talk on climate. He needs to stop new fracking infrastructure, move NY to 100% renewable energy, and make polluters pay. Who’s with me? Sign up at cuomowalkthetalk.org! #CuomoWalkTheTalk

6. Reach out to groups you’re part of — activist groups, school clubs, congregations, and more!

Can you print out this flier and hand it out at your next gathering?

Can you send this short blurb to a listserv you’re on, or post in a Facebook group you’re part of? —

In a time of record-shattering hurricanes, with our federal government bought and sold by the fossil fuel industry, states like New York must lead fight against climate change. But for all his talk, Governor Cuomo is taking too little action. On April 23rd in Albany, join the biggest climate rally in the history of the NY Capitol — it’s called “Cuomo Walk the Talk on Climate!” We need your help to tell Gov. Cuomo that he needs to walk his talk on climate by 1) stopping all new fracking infrastructure; 2) moving NY as quickly as possible to 100% renewable energy; and 3) making polluters pay for the climate damage they cause. Read more and RSVP for a free bus to Albany at: cuomowalkthetalk.org

We also have a great outreach toolkit that has more materials so you can:

  • Send an email blast (copy & paste from that toolkit)
  • Print out fliers and hand them out wherever you like!
  • Make social media posts

7. Send a personal text to a friend or family member

Ask your children, your parents, your neighbors, your friends. Reach out to that person who says they *want* to get active to protect New Yorkers from climate change and damage to our air and water…but hasn’t figured out exactly what to do yet. This event will be an inspiring place to start!

Keep it simple, tell them you’re going (or wish you could go), and send them to cuomowalkthetalk.org.

Together, we can make sure thousands of people flood the NY capital and make it clear: real leaders treat climate change with urgency and bold vision.

Thanks for spreading the word for Governor Cuomo: Walk the Talk on Climate! See you in Albany on April 23.

Feel free to email NY Renews coalition organizer Daniela with any questions about getting involved: daniela.lapidous@nyrenews.org — thanks!
