Lauren, thanks for the article! Your view of digital nomads as the vanguard of an egalitarian future allowing locals into future computing economies is not grounded in reality, sadly. It would be wonderful were it so. Digital nomads are effectively acting as parasites, pulling more from local economies than they give back. It’s always that way. They live and work in their own communities, walled-off from the reality of ordinary people’s lives breaking local conventions and speaking the local language badly, if at all. Nomad communities operate in exactly the same way as the “European Quarters” of colonial nations did. There will be no access into this gated digital community for outside and if there is, it will be in menial, “outsourced” positions with derisory pay.
