Review: So interesting to read about the Tina without the Ike … the only story I knew was the movie and I loved that but this is an up close and personal story with the woman herself!

Review: At one point, life became so bad for Tina Turner that she tried suicide, and when she woke up in a hospital bed and realized she was alive, she was devastated. Tina Turner was in such an abusive marriage with Ike Turner death was preferable. He beat her up so often that her nose was permanently displaced, her jaw broken and she had permanent black eyes. She went to the local ED’s but because of her color she was treated, released and the abuse never reported. And, then she escaped.

Tina was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nuthouse, Tenn in 1939. She was an unloved child, her mother left her family, and this was to become part of her life. She never felt loved until her second marriage. Tina could always sing and dance as a child, and this led to her career. She went to an Ike Turner concert, and when he heard her sing she was offered a job. They had four children to bring up, she brought a son into this marriage, Ike brought two sons, and they had a son together. The abuse she suffered in this marriage is well documented, but the real story is when she escaped, left Ike and started her new life.

The book is a reflection of Tina’s professional life and how she made the big time. She became successful with her talent, and her ability to make her own publicity. Her hit records, and her life as a professional singer and dancer is a highlight. Tina did it her way, and she brought up her children with love. The suicide of her son, Craig, this past summer was a devastating loss in a difficult year.

Tina met the love of her life, Erwin Bach, and after 23 years together they married in a lavish ceremony in Switzerland, her new home. Marriage was wonderful, and then she became ill, a stroke, kidney failure, and kidney transplant. Tina’s story shows the resilience, stamina and courage of a woman who has overcome so many obstacles in her life. And the final tragedy of her son’s suicide. Tina has had quite a life, and she is a woman to admire. The lessons Tina has learned, “Before you can really help anyone, you have to strengthen yourself” is reflected throughout her life.

Review: This book moved me to my core. I only wish I had the words to do justice to the experience of reading it. Without trying and by telling her truth Tina’s story speaks with a narrative ease and graceful self compassion (as well as generalized compassion). Her life has been a love story and I feel honored to have shared some of it via these pages. Thank you.

Review: I was surprised to hear that Tina was doing another book. I was so hoping that this would be a good book written by her; not just an interview recorded and then typed up and called an autobiography.
I do like this book, however there are some problems. A lot of the book I felt as if Tina was next to me talking about her career. Then suddenly, ‘where’s Tina and who’s talking to me’. Ghostwriter! It’s just very obvious. I also think that there were many interesting facts made in I, Tina by band members, Ikettes and others that were left out of this book (I guess for obvious reasons). However, if Kurt Loder had actually done some work to I, Tina and the ghost on My Love Story took a step back from being all the things she’s not, together this would definitely be a great book to learn about music, life and strength. But they were done so far apart and then there was a movie. I can understand why she’d now want people to know her life since Private Dancer. Obviously we wouldn’t have expected to blow up as it did and still going today when she’s 80 and her life story is on Broadway!
I’m the official Tina Turner fan. Whether it’s Ike & Tina or solo Tina she has definitely made a great contribution to contemporary music. If you only saw the movie, an old performance on the internet or an interview with Oprah and now you think you know all about The Queen of Rock & Roll (but still think Elvis is the King) I would suggest that you read this book.

Review: I read her I, Tina. I was young then. I think I borrowed it from Rosenberg Library in Galveston TX because I remember my mother criticizing me for reading it, though I don’t remember what the criticism was.

I felt then, and still do, Tina Turner exemplifies the beauty of overcoming adversity and Wholehearted living (c’mon! I just finished binging on Brenè lol!).

If you read I, Tina and thinking about skipping My Love Story, don’t. I feel My Love Story really digs deep and Tina was mentally and emotionally able to revisit the past in a way she couldn’t in I, Tina.

This read is a good way to close out (Black) Women’s History Month.
