Launch and Autel are two renowned brands that manufacture automotive diagnostic devices. Both brands provide a variety of products with diverse features and price ranges.

Launch, a Chinese company, has been operating in the automotive diagnostic tool industry since 1992. They offer an extensive range of diagnostic devices, including handheld scanners, diagnostic tablets, and advanced diagnostic systems. Launch products are recognized for their precision, speed, and user-friendly interfaces. They are competitively priced and come with reliable customer support.

Similarly, Autel, another Chinese company, specializes in diagnostic devices such as key programmers, handheld scanners, diagnostic tablets, and advanced diagnostic systems. Autel products are known for their advanced features, including bi-directional control and programming capabilities. They also have a reputation for durability and reliability.

Now, let’s delve into the distinctions between Launch and Autel to facilitate your decision-making process:

1. Software Startup and Protection

Launch x431 relies on a Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI). If the VCI is lost, it must be replaced, and the account needs to be transferred. On the other hand, if the tablet is lost, you only need to purchase a new one and log in with your username and password.

Autel, on the other hand, builds its software directly on the tablet. If the tablet is lost, the software and data are also lost. However, if the VCI is lost, it can be easily replaced.

2. Additional Devices

Launch allows the addition of key programming functionality. In contrast, Autel does not offer this option, requiring the purchase of a separate device.

For Autel devices that require both scanning and key programming capabilities, the recommended choice is the IM608 Pro 2.

Launch X-431 PAD VII offers the option to add a TPMS TGGUN for TPMS sensor programming, which Autel does not provide. To add this feature with Autel, a separate device like TS501 or TS601 needs to be purchased.

(Note: Some Autel models, such as MaxiPro MP808Z-TS and MaxiCheck MX808TS, have built-in TPMS functions.)

Both Launch and Autel allow the addition of a borescope camera and a battery tester.

3. Key Programming

Autel provides better key programming capabilities. It requires the MaxiIM tablet (IM508, IM608 PRO 2), but not the MSUltra.

4. TPMS Sensor Programming and Relearning

Autel outperforms Launch in TPMS sensor programming and relearning. However, it necessitates the use of Autel’s standalone TPMS scanner.

5. Price

Autel products are generally more expensive than Launch products. Additionally, Autel Update Subscription tends to be pricier than Launch’s. While Autel offers more advanced features, it comes at a higher cost.

6. Reporting

Both Launch and Autel provide users with scan reports. However, Autel Ultra‘s cloud foundation facilitates easy report downloading.

7. Heavy-Duty Scanner

For heavy-duty scanning, Launch’s combination of LAUNCH X431 V+ and HD III add-on is better, cheaper, and easier to use than MaxiSys MS909CV from Autel. Autel offers the option to purchase standalone equipment while allowing for the addition of heavy modules.

8. Region

Launch is better suited for European, Korean, and Japanese cars, while Autel is more compatible with American cars.
