The show is currently ongoing with 5 seasons (Season 5 not yet completed) and has earned the love of most animation fans. Some episodes/scenes of this show have left many fans shocked and speechless. These episodes are precisely what I’ll be talking about here.

So, I have gone through them and selected the top 5 moments of the show that made fans go WTF.

If you’re currently watching the show or you’re planning to see it soon, this is a big spoiler alert warning for you. Now, let’s dive in.

5). RICK AND MORTY BURY THEIR DEAD SELVES FROM ANOTHER REALITY (RICK POTION #9—Season one, episode six).

Photo from The Movie Database:

After Rick had given Morty a love potion to get his (Morty) crush to like him, the serum latches with the flu virus and soon spreads throughout the world, instead making everyone fall in love with him. Rick tries to stop this by creating an antidote made with mantis DNA which went horribly wrong and instead turned everyone into mantis-like creatures who all wanted to eat Morty.

While hiding out in a desert away from the infected masses, Rick then goes ahead to create a third serum which goes on to worsen the already bad situation by turning the population again into creatures later dubbed as “Cronenbergs”.

Then, Rick realises there’s no solving this situation and comes up with a plan. He searches through the multiverse for a reality where he and Morty eventually find a cure to the pandemic, and then die.

Rick then opens a portal to this reality (Dimension C-131) where they’re already dead in, bury their alternate selves and just replace them!

This clearly traumatized Morty, but Rick just acts like nothing even happened. Perhaps he’s done it before. Who knows?

4). EVIL MORTY WAS ACTUALLY THE ONE CONTROLLING EVIL RICK (CLOSE RICK COUNTERS OF THE RICK KIND — Season one, episode ten).

Photo from Fandom-Rick and Morty Wiki:

After Rick is arrested by the Trans-Dimensional Council of Ricks and accused of murdering 27 Ricks, he escapes with Morty to find the actual murderer trying to frame him.

At Evil Rick’s place, Morty witnesses the horror his alternate selves pass through and realises he’s just a tool to protect and help out Rick. He then leads a rebellion with the other Mortys against Evil Rick, which was successful.

Later, Evil Rick is arrested by the Trans-Dimensional Council of Ricks. However, three Ricks from the council made a shocking discovery. They saw that he was being mind-controlled by someone else and wasn’t acting of his own accord.

It is revealed to the audience that his own Morty (Evil Morty) was actually the one controlling him. This is a shocking twist that made viewers go, “Wait, what?”.

3). MR POOPYBUTTHOLE WAS REAL (TOTAL RICKALL—Season two, episode four.

Photo from Fandom-Rick and Morty Wiki:

When the Smith family are attacked by parasites who implant fake pleasant memories into their heads so they can’t tell who they know and don’t know, Rick (or should I say, Morty) noticed that they had no bad memories with the parasites and start gunning down anyone they don’t have a bad memory with.

When they were done, Beth thinks Mr Poopybutthole is also fake and then shoots him. But instead of turning back into an alien form, he was badly bleeding. He was actually real!

When the family later went to visit him at the hospital, Mr Poopybutthole asked the nurse to tell Beth that he was sorry they didn’t have any bad memories together and she breaks down in tears. Yikes!

2). TAMMY WORKED FOR THE GALACTIC FEDERATION (THE WEDDING SQUANCHERS—Season two, episode ten.

Photo from Fandom-Rick and Morty Wiki:

Rick’s friend, Birdperson, is getting married to Summer’s friend Tammy Guterman and invites Rick over to the wedding. Rick, however, declines the invitation but is forced to go because Jerry is accidentally sent to the wedding destination and Rick has to bring him back.

The wedding was going fine. Then all of a sudden, Tammy brings out a gun along with some other agents mixed with the crowd. She then reveals she is an agent of The Galactic Federation and has been working undercover for this moment where she could get them (Birdperson, Rick, Squanchy etc) all together and apprehend them.

She even shoots and kills Birdperson when he tried to advance towards her. Rick eventually escapes but later turned himself in, ensuring that the Smith family return safely back to earth.

The revelation of Tammy’s true identity was a shocker and unexpected twist. She later went on to be one of the chief antagonists of the show along with Evil Morty.

1). MORTY CAUSES MR LUNAS TO KILL HIMSELF (MORTY’S MIND BLOWERS — Season three, episode eight).

Photo from The Movie Database:

After Morty complained about the looping memory in his head and that he wanted the memory erased, Rick shows Morty a secret chamber in the garage where he kept tubes containing archives of memories Morty wanted him to remove.

A blue tube, which Rick nicknamed “Moon-spiracy” is inserted into a helmet and placed on Morty’s head.

In this memory, Morty is looking at the moon through a telescope admiring the American flag when he came across a manly figure supposedly on the moon. He then goes ahead to tell his family, but they don’t believe him and tell him it’s just a smudge on the telescope. But Morty isn’t convinced.

Mr Lunas, the man supposedly on the moon, is then introduced in Morty’s class, where he says something making reference to the moon. Morty now fully believes Mr Lunas is up to something and takes pictures of him planting the American Flag in his yard.

He reports this to the principal, who mistook his complaints as a figure of speech for paedophilia. The Principal confronts Lunas, says some things and punches Lunas in the face.

As a result of this, Lunas kills himself and Morty learns at his funeral that he once served in the Marine Corps and most people said he looked like a smudge.

He then runs back home to check his telescope, and it was indeed, a smudge. It was then that Morty realised what he had done.

He had pushed a man to kill himself!!!
