We all want to have fun every once in a while. But that can be difficult when you’re in an unfamiliar city and can barely find your way around town. If you’re trying to have a good time in Owerri but you’re not sure about how to do that — say no more. This article will explain five interesting things to do in Owerri that will make your visit to this Southeastern city worth your while.

Owerri is the capital of Imo state and its people speak a dialect of the Igbo language known as Owerre. There are hotels, nightclubs, lounges, and even a local airport in this city. Many other entertainment and event centres are scattered across Owerri. One of them is the famous Oguta Lake Resort.

1. Enjoy the Oguta Lake Holiday Resort.

No matter what part of the country you’re coming from, you don’t want to skip this tourist spot. Visitors from all over flock to this place during the holidays. You will enjoy the sight of the clean, clear lake water as you pass right over it in a boat or yacht. Experienced swimmers, who are mostly foreigners, love to swim in this lake as it is not only clear but also free of crocodiles and other dangerous animals. You can lodge in the beautiful, moderately-priced hotel on the premises and enjoy the clean, inviting natural environment. Golf lovers will enjoy the standard golf course that graces this place. But you don’t want to leave this city without a bit of an education in its culture.

2. Tour the Mbari Cultural and Art Centre.

This place is a museum that showcases the various gods in Igbo mythology. Some of them include Ogwugwu — the forest god, and Amadioha — the god of thunder. Their messengers are also captured here. They include rams, monkeys, tortoises, and snakes. Different sculptures and paintings depicting the history and culture of the Owerre people can be found here. A lot has changed at the art centre over the years. But that is another reason to go and experience the Mbari culture while you still can. You can even buy some colourful items from the site while you’re at it.

3. Wine and dine at the Cubana Lounge.

This is a nice open-air bar that serves delicious finger food and many types of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. The rich food and mind-blowing music are a major attraction for fun lovers. This is a place where you can dance to your heart’s content. There are even sections for people who want to host private parties, weddings, or other events. All this entertainment comes at a price though — it’s not cheap. But what do you expect? The place is owned by none other than the billionaire celebrity, Chief Obinna Iyiegbu AKA Obi Cubana. Yes — He’s not a native of Owerri, but he can tell you one or two things about the special soup of this town.

4. Try the local ofe Owerre soup.

It is called ofe owerre in the local language. You can walk into any good restaurant and order the soup with eba, fufu, or pounded yam. This soup is symbolic of the rich culture that dots the city. It is tasty and nourishing, and for good reason. The soup is made with ugu and okazi leaves, dry fish, stockfish, beef, snails, ponmo, and so much more. Going by tradition, the soup is eaten at one sitting. That means it is not stored overnight for another meal session. That explains the lyrics of the Igbo highlife song sung in praise of the soup: “Can a broke person eat ofe owerre?”

Last but not least on this list of interesting things to do in Owerri is a visit to the Amusement Park. You can go with your family and friends. The rides, swings, and the cheerful atmosphere filled with children will calm your soul. Food and snacks are also readily available for sale within the premises.
