How This Generation of Leaders Failed Leadership

Good stuff, as far as it goes. Like people everywhere, Americans elect a head of state with the expectation that they’ll do something about their biggest concerns. And, like heads of state everywhere, the American president has limited ability to do things about all concerns, big, small & in between. Unlike the UK, the American president may not (and does not currently) come from the same party as the majority in the House, the Senate, or both. Unlike Parliament, the upper house is necessary to govern. It’s a system that was intentionally designed to make change difficult that, almost 230 years later, is increasingly inadequate for a world that changes faster year by year. And, like governments everywhere, the American one has limited ability to go against changes that are driven by developments in the greater world, notably automation & it’s impact on employment. Given a complex reality that defies understanding & quick fixes, a sizable fraction of the American public turns to this demagogue who flatters them & puts the blame on the minorities within it, as demagogues have always done. In business, ad campaigns are endlessly revised to be recycled & great profits can be made by fooling enough people once. Governing requires more for those with the humility to appreciate the stakes.
