The only job of the pilots of the aggressor training squadrons is simulated air combat against US and allied fighter units that rotate through training centers like Nellis AFB and Fallon NAS. The same for the MiG-21 equipped unit at Area 51. Most Soviet pilots operated under budgets that provided for a fraction of the flying time, and trained for a variety of missions including ones that did not approach the limits of their aircraft.
