Good ideas for designing a web page
This blog post is a follow up from our most recent post a couple weeks ago concerning bad ideas for a web page. As stated before, the octavia.tech team likes to have brainstorming sessions and one particular sessions focused on what makes a good page. This may seem like a no-brainer for a web development company, but we feel it is beneficial to actively reflect on what makes a good design and what we should be including in our work.
Plan your sites: Every website should, hopefully, have a reason for existing. Maybe your site is supposed to promote your business, give users more information about a certain topic, or interact with other users with a common purpose. Find the reason behind your website, and plan on its design accordingly. For example, if you are promoting your business, show us your business and all the information that users would need. A website that is not designed to work for the reason it is up will never have a chance at being successful.
High-resolution pictures: Right now photos are a very big deal for Internet users and whether if it is an amazing picture taken for a photo gallery or a selfie that makes your day, people are focusing on pictures. Technology is constantly updating and upgrading meaning people can see those pictures better than they could have yesterday and when you want your page to excel you need high-resolution. Low-res pictures simply do not have the same “pop” and can be very unflattering for users. Keep your photos sharp and clear for everyone to enjoy.
Page flow: This one may be more difficult for the average person to notice, but page flow is very important and can make or break your web page. Is the information presented to the user in a way that makes sense (chronological, importance, etc.)? Is the information presented in a way that even your less tech-savvy users can find? You want to make sure everything is in a position that makes sense and can be seen. Otherwise, why have that information there at all? As a designer, it is critical to think how the page flow will help or hurt the users. Keeping this in mind will lead to better page designs.
These are just a few of our ideas on what makes a good website design. There are plenty more to consider, but these are a good start. Do you have some other thoughts on what makes a good site? Let us know about, we would love to know what you think.
