It’s not about Waterfall or Scrum. It’s about results

Hello, how are you?

Those days I’ve argued about methodologies and culture thus, I wanna expose my point.

That point is the same as I’ve told before, but not about technology. It’s a bit more sub-conscious, it’s the main engine of a team: the organizing method.

When you are handling with an IT team, you can choose a lot of options from waterfall to the famous scrum, and, with the time, this choice is becoming more and more difficult. So, how can I find something to lead my team to the prize?

You must go just to the main goal!!!

All businesses exist with the purpose to create value, because of this we have a lot of companies doing the strangest things in the world, to solve someone’s problem. So, you must find the management method that makes all this wheel work better.

But Octavio, what is the difference from “all that talk about culture and adaptative enviroment” and your point?

My point is that the best method is the one in which its team’s results can be truly measured, by numbers, indicators. This way, you will not found up in that old discussion of “we cannot use Scrum, because it doesn’t fit with the company’s culture”.

So, you define your goal, then you estimate the benefits of one or another method, finaly you’ll mathematically choose the best way. It’s about timing, happiness and the amount of tools you’ll have to solve problems and mitigate failures. The way you can glimpse better results, is the one to your company.

Of course, we find a lot of obstacles, not because of your method or methodology, but the way you managed to introduce your management way to your team.

You must avoid politics or any threats that came from top-to-down resolutions and, with numbers plus your team aside you, the methodology will adapt itself to your own environment, not like a fight, but a river, with curves but flowing to its main goal.

Summing it all up, it’s not a method or methodology fault, or your culture or something that have to fit with anything. Again, it’s all about fill the gap of a path to reach your company’s goal and discuss it among your team.

See ya.
